Do You Value Your Values?
I attended a meeting the other day. One of the things we did was to list our top three values. Do you ever do that? The list I made had the things that were supposed to be most important to me. The exercise made me acutely aware that I don't always value my values. For instance, one of my top values is health, or so I said. Am I living my health value when I decide to skip a workout at the gym? How about when I eat foods that I know are loaded with sugar, fat, or those things with unpronounceable names? Something had to change. I watched a comedian on TV later that same day. Part of his routine included a thing he called "Here's your sign". Light bulb moment! That was my solution to the values dilemma. I needed a sign too. I took some note cards and wrote one of my values on each one in big letters. I made several copies of each. Now it was a simple matter to leave them in places I would see throughout the day. In the car, on the refrigerator, the bathroom mirror, or wherever I would casually run across them. It's a simple, low tech way to stay on track with the things you value. It's working for me. I hope you'll give it a try too. |
